Ionising radiation Discover the causes of leukaemia in children

With the organisation of an international expert workshop, BfS seeks to advance the research into causes of leukaemia in children. From 14 to 16 November 2016, paediatricians, radiation protection experts, epidemiologists, geneticists and other researchers gathered in Munich, on invitation of BfS, in order to share research results and current knowledge in their disciplines. The aim was to determine new starting points for the investigation of causes and to advance research strategies.

Ionising radiation Nuclear accidents: Increasing the focus on mental and social consequences

Professionals in public authorities and scientists recommend that emergency response planning should increasingly take into account the mental and social consequences of nuclear accidents. This is the result of an interdisciplinary workshop organised by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) and the Centre for Security and Society at Freiburg University.

Ionising radiation International exercise to measure radioactivity in the Chernobyl exclusion zone

The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) and the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine will conduct radioactivity measurements in the exclusion zone around the damaged reactor block of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant from 26 to 29 September 2016. The Ukrainian and German teams plan to jointly train radioactivity measurements in special operating conditions. The results will help to determine the current radiological situation in the 30-kilometre zone surrounding the nuclear power plant.

Ionising radiation Increased patient protection in X-ray applications – BfS reduces dose limits for medical professionals

X-ray images, computed tomography (CT) and minimally-invasive interventions performed under X-ray control are always associated with a radiation exposure to the patient. X-ray applications are subject to certain diagnostic reference values in order to keep this radiation exposure as low as possible. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) has now reduced these reference values – by 20 percent on average, in some cases even by 50 percent.

Optical Radiation Sunburn – Not only a free time phenomenon

Gardeners, masons or roofers have no choice as to whether they spend the summer in the shade or in the sun. A study of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has shown that the workers in these sections get significantly more sun than is good for them: Part of them are exposed to three to five times more UV radiation as white collar workers.
