Optical Radiation Use of strong light sources in cosmetics associated with risks

The use of strong light sources in cosmetics is associated with health risks. A current poll on behalf of the BfS has shown that just under one fifth of the treatments resulted in permanent side effects, such as scars. Another two fifth had non-permanent side effects. "The poll confirms that the optical irradiation of the skin may have unpleasant consequences. Therefore, we promote a sound education of persons providing such treatments in cosmetics on a professional basis," BfS President Inge Paulini said.

Optical Radiation Off you go on holidays – but without sunburn

Whether on the beach, in the mountains or by the outdoor pool – the start to summer holidays in several federal states entices many people to spend a great deal of time outdoors. In order to not have spoiled the fun by sunburn, the BfS recommends to be careful when exposed to the sun. "Those enjoying the sun on holidays should avoid sunburn," Dr. Inge Paulini, President of the BfS, says. "In view of the increasing number of skin cancer diseases, we urgently recommend sufficient sun protection."

Ionising radiation Radon protection: A contribution to sustainable building

Creating modern buildings from old structures to provide sustainable living and working areas - that is the objective of many owners. The main focus here is on environmentally friendly materials and energy-saving solutions. In order not to miss out health aspects, building projects should also always take into account the protection against radon. This is pointed out by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) on the occasion of the European Sustainability Week.

Optical Radiation Enjoying the sun safely: UV-Newsletter provides information on the risk of sunburn

At last – spring is here! But careful: With the stronger solar radiation the UV irradiance increases, too, and thus the risk of developing skin cancer. If you want to protect yourself, you should bear in mind the UV index. The three-day-forecast of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection helps in this regard: The BfS UV-Newsletter emails information on the current UV index three times a week.

Ionising radiation BfS will support the WHO in the future also in emergency protection and in risk communication

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will continue to support the World Health Organisation WHO with its expertise in the field of radiation protection. In addition to the existing subject areas such as the assessment of health effects of UV radiation or protection against the radioactive inert gas radon and its decay products, BfS will also be involved in emergency protection and risk communication as a partner of the WHO in the future. In particular, contributions to dose assessment and risk evaluation in nuclear emergencies have been planned.
