Electromagnetic fields Carefully telephoning without borders

In time for the holiday season, the fees for using mobile phones when being abroad are cancelled within the EU. Starting on 15 June, using a mobile phone in other EU countries is basically no longer more expensive than at home, with some exceptions. In Germany, flat rates are widely spread anyway. So, hardly anyone has to be concerned any more about the mobile phone bill.

Optical Radiation Enjoy the sun in the shade

A broader range of options for protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, such as shaded spaces, shall be provided for anybody staying outdoors in their direct surroundings. This is the subject matter of the position paper "Prevention of harmful effects of the sun – environmental prevention in urban and rural areas" recently published by the Alliance for UV Protection (UV-Schutz-Bündnis). The Alliance is a cooperation of renowned associations, organisations and authorities in the fields of radiation protection, medicine, science and occupational health and safety, initiated by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz, BfS). The Alliance's goal is to minimise the risk of diseases caused by exposure to UV radiation – particularly the risk of skin cancer – thus preventing the steadily increasing occurrence of skin cancer.

Optical Radiation Sunny Emails: UV Newsletter

April weather – rain, snow, sunshine all together. Particularly in springtime, the weather is very changeable. Yet, whatever the weather conditions, the strength of the sun's radiation rises during spring, thereby increasing exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The UV-newsletter to be sent regularly once again by the Federal Office for Radiation (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS) provides information about the strength of ultraviolet radiation and on how to protect from ultraviolet radiation.

Ionising radiation Study examines foods for radioactive substances

In co-operation with the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will examine prepared food for radiation caused by radioactive elements such as uranium within the framework of the BfE-MEAL Study. Especially foods most frequently consumed by the German population will be considered. This includes foods from cereal products as well as vegetables and potatoes, dairy products, meat, and fish.

Optical Radiation Sunbeds pose health risks

Persons using sunbeds take health risks. This warning, which the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) already expressed in the past, is confirmed by international experts. Among others, the BfS has been advocating for a regulation of sunbed operation for years. Since August 2009, minors have been prohibited by legislation from using sunbeds. Furthermore, an ordinance regulates the device standard, operation and use, tasks and qualification of qualified personnel for solaria.
