Pursuant to the Precautionary Radiation Protection Act, the BfS is responsible for the large-scale measurement of environmental radioactivity and for the airborne detection of radiation sources. For this purpose, the Berlin and Munich sites have each two operational, ready-to-use, airworthy, gamma spectrometric measuring systems. In order to ensure their operational readiness, a joint measurement exercise of the BfS and the federal police force is carried out annually for which the federal police force or, respectively, disaster control helicopters are equipped with the BfS measuring systems.

From 26 to 29 September 2016, staff members of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) conducted a measurement exercise together with colleagues from the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine in the exclusion zone around the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl. Daniel Esch, a physicist at the BfS, reported for us about the exercise in his online diary. Here are some more impressions.
