Electromagnetic fields Promising Trend: rising number of low-radiation mobile phones on the market

Shortly before the opening of the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) Berlin, the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS, Federal Office for Radiation Protection) records a trend towards low-radiation mobile phones. This emerges from a recently updated review by BfS on the radiation values of mobile phones and smartphones comprising 170 new models. The list is also published on the BfS website. The newest update comprises almost 3,000 units from more than 70 producers, also including older models which are no longer produced.

Electromagnetic fields Greater participation in power network expansion

To enable the broadest possible debate about aspects of radiation protection in the expansion of the power network, the BfS has opened up on its website the opportunity to participate in a radiation protection research programme already started as part of the expansion of the power network. Until the middle of September, interested parties have the opportunity of viewing the individual projects within the programme and giving a statement of their position online. This is to be evaluated by the BfS and considered in the further planning of the research programme.

Optical Radiation Closing a gap in the UV measuring network at 2,600 m above sea level

From the North German coasts to the Alps: With the installation of a new measuring station on the Zugspitze mountain, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) ensures that the UV radiation measurements cover all climate zones in Germany without any gaps. The data that can now be collected makes it possible to determine reliable and accurate values for the UV exposure in high mountain regions. This data is important for mountaineers, hikers or skiers so that they are able to protect themselves in the best possible way against UV radiation and the risk of sunburn.

Electromagnetic fields Milestone for radiation protection in the context of the power grid expansion

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will conduct a large-scale research programme, supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, in order to intensify investigations into potential adverse health effects of power lines. Planning includes more than 30 schemes and projects. Ms. Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for the Environment, and BfS President Ms. Inge Paulini presented the 18 million Euro project on Tuesday, 11 July 2017, together with a group of experts on the occasion of a symposium in Berlin. The research programme represents a milestone in establishing BfS as a competence centre for radiation protection with respect to the power grid expansion.

Ionising radiation Practising a nuclear emergency across borders

Together with several European institutions, the BfS trains an emergency which will hopefully never occur: Together with the Swiss National Alarm Centre, the Federal Police, and teams from France and the Czech Republic, the BfS takes part in a helicopter measurement exercise for a nuclear emergency from 26 June to 30 June 2017. The main objective of this exercise is to co-ordinate the measuring teams such that they are instantaneously ready for operation across borders in a nuclear emergency.
