Electromagnetic fields Federal Office for Radiation Protection presents new teaching material on mobile telecommunication at didacta education fair

Wireless transmission of data has become an integral part of life. Already children use their own smart phones and go online via a mobile device – often also at school. Free teaching materials of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) make it possible for teachers and pupils to treat central issues of mobile telecommunication at school: Just in time for the didacta in Stuttgart, the BfS has issued a completely revised version.

Ionising radiation New tasks and projects assigned to Federal Office for Radiation Protection by World Health Organization (WHO)

The World Health Organization (WHO) have strengthened their collaboration with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz, BfS): for the third time in succession, WHO reappointed BfS as WHO collaborating centre and enlarged the areas of cooperation at the same time. For the first time, the BfS is an official partner in the area of "development and implementation of standards and guidelines". As for the areas already established, numerous new projects add to the established collaboration.

Ionising radiation New directive calls for enhanced radon protection at home and at work

On 5 December 2013, the Council of the European Union adopted a directive aimed at renewing the European radiation protection legislation. Experts of the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) were involved in the elaboration of this directive. The directive builds on international standards recommended by international panels such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Ionising radiation Monitoring the ban on nuclear tests: BfS radioactivity measurements at highest international level

In terms of detecting the radioactive noble gas xenon, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is among the best in the world: The Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) has certified the highly sensitive BfS measuring system for radioactive xenon (SPALAX). In addition to the system for radioactive air-borne dust, the CTBTO has thus confirmed highest measuring quality also to the second BfS-operated measuring system for the monitoring of the world-wide ban on nuclear tests.

Electromagnetic fields Involving Citizens - Promoting Acceptance

With increasing frequency, citizens are demanding to be involved in important decision-making processes. In the new issue of the magazine Umwelt und Mensch – Informationsdienst (UMID / Environment and People - Information Service), writers from the authorities, the sciences and citizen initiatives present standpoints, perspectives and examples on the subject of citizen involvement. These show how forms of participation can be structured or further developed and explain new legal regulations for citizen involvement in the field of "Environment and Health".
