Optical Radiation No sunburn during springtime: UV-newsletter starts on April

Winter is over and everybody enjoys outdoor activities every free minute they have. However, the power of the sun is easily underestimated right during the first sunny days of the year. So, a barbecue with friends at noontime may not only bring grilled food but also sunburn to your skin. Sunburn can be avoided when everything is in its place: the party guests under the parasol, body and head sufficiently shielded and sun screen on the skin.

Ionising radiation Best paper of the year award for uranium miners study

Researchers from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz, BfS) received the best paper award from the German preventive medicine journal "Arbeits-, Sozial- und Umweltmedizin (ASU) – Zeitschrift für medizinische Prävention" for their scientific work on the health effects of uranium mining. The award recognises, among others, the "importance to the scientific community" and the "traceability of results".

First day of spring – and the sun will take a short rest. On 20 March parts of the sun will be hidden behind the moon in a partial solar eclipse. If you wish to follow this impressing natural phenomenon please do not rely on household items. Smoked glass, black film strips and CDs or similar items are not only inadequate to watch the sun, they are also dangerous for your eyes. Those who risk watching the sun without appropriate protection will jeopardize their eyesight.

Optical Radiation Expert bodies advise against using sunbeds for self-treatment of vitamin D deficiency

Ultra violet (UV) radiation is beneficial as it stimulates vitamin D production in the body. At the same time, UV radiation is harmful: at worst, it can cause skin cancer. How to get the right balance? Guidance is provided by a joint recommendation on UV-radiation and vitamin-D synthesis submitted today by 20 expert bodies in the fields of radiation protection, health, risk assessment, medicine and nutrition submitted.
