Prize jury decides on new build for BfS in Neuherberg

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is getting a new laboratory and office building at its research site in Neuherberg. On 21 September 2017, the prize jury selected the winner of the design competition. The Berlin architecture firm "Glass Kramer Löbbert Architekten BDA" won over the jury with its design. The individual participant contributions in the architecture competition organised by the Institute for Federal Real Estate (BImA) are being exhibited from 22 to 28 Septem-ber in the Alten Schloss in Schleißheim.

Electromagnetic fields Online consultation on power grid expansion completed

The online consultation on radiation protection during the process of power grid expansion has been completed. The research programme of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz, BfS) under the same title has attracted great interest: 235 comments reached the BfS up to 15 September 2017, of which 10 were in English. Interested parties had the opportunity to comment on the research programme on the BfS website from 17 July to 15 September 2017. The comments will be evaluated by BfS experts and taken into account in further planning of the research programme.

Ionising radiation Positive international feedback for BfS labs in Berlin

60 experts in the field of environmental radioactivity and radioecology taking part in the ICRER (International Conference on Radioecology and Environmental Radioactivity) emphasized the high level of expertise and the high quality of the equipment presented by the BfS. The scientists had visited the labs operated by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) in Berlin. They were shown the gamma spectrometry laboratory, the accredited radon calibration laboratory, the whole body counter and partial body counter as well as the equipment available for nuclear emergency response.

Ionising radiation Another nuclear weapons test in North Korea

On 3 September 2017 at 5:30 a.m. (CEST), the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) registered again seismic shockwaves that were probably caused by another underground nuclear weapons test in North Korea. The last time this has happened was on 9 September 2016. The National Data Centre of the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) performed a preliminary assessment of seismic data with respect to the incidence and concluded that the local origin was similar to that of the tests in 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2016.

Electromagnetic fields Centre of excellence for radiation protection in power network expansion

The open-ended and independent clarification of open research questions is for precautionary reasons an indispensable accompaniment to the expansion of the power network. This is the conclusion drawn by participants of the launch event on 11 July 2017 in Berlin for the research programme "Radiation protection in power network expansion". Around 80 representatives from science, politics, companies and citizens' initiatives discussed the 18 million euro research package from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). It was repeatedly highlighted that the BfS was taking on an important role as a centre of excellence for radiation protection in the expansion of the power network.
