Ionising radiation Roofing ceremony on the Schauinsland

The roofing ceremony for the new building of the BfS measuring station on the Schauinsland near Freiburg was held on 11 April 2018. The new building is attached to the main building of the international measuring station and will host, among others, a new, highly sensitive RASA-Radionuclide Aerosol Sampler and Analyzer (Radionuclide Aerosol Sampler and Analyzer) measuring device. With the help of the fully automatic RASA measuring technology it is possible to detect even the lowest concentrations of airborne radioactive substances.

Ionising radiation Expert discussion of the Environment Committee on the Fukushima reactor disaster

On the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the Fukushima reactor disaster in March 2011, the Committee for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of the German Bundestag discussed the topic on 14 March 2018. In a public expert discussion, Dr. Stefan Thomas, member of the German-Japanese Transition Council, reported on the consequences of the reactor disaster and answered questions from the members of parliament.

Ionising radiation Second Meeting of the Commission of Inquiry on Ruthenium

On 11. April 2018 the second meeting of the International Commission of Inquiry on Ruthenium was held in Moscow, and again the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) was represented by two experts. As before, the meeting was hosted by the Nuclear Safety Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IBRAE).

Ionising radiation International Commission reviews release of ruthenium-106

BfS staff members support the Nuclear Safety Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IBRAE) in the attempt to clarify elevated ruthenium 106 values, which were detected in large parts of Eu-rope at the end of September 2017. At the first meeting of the International Commission of Inquiry in Moscow, the findings of international and Russian experts were presented and discussed in depth. On the basis of these findings, first joint conclusions were drawn.

Ionising radiation Wismut Study: Increased risk of radon-related lung cancer also in the low-dose range

With the German Uranium Miners Study (Wismut Study), the BfS conducts one of the largest studies on radiation risk world-wide. Latest results have now been published in "Radiation Research": The uranium miners' radon-related lung cancer risk also increases in the low-dose range and it decreases clearly the more time has passed since the exposure to radon. Together, smoking and radon lead to a particularly high risk.
