Measurement exercise 2013 in Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Hesse

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz - BfS) and the German Federal Police (Bundespolizei - BPOL) carried out a measurement exercise in the states Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and Hesse from 7 to 10 October 2013. This included helicopter-borne measurements of environmental radioactivity in the vicinity of the nuclear installations Cattenom and Biblis, as well as in areas of slightly elevated natural radioactivity near Ludwigshafen, Schweisweiler, Schallodenbach, and Ellweiler.

Measurement exercise 2012 in Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony

As part of the annual national measurement exercise, the BfS and the German Federal Police (Bundespolizei) carried out helicopter-borne measurements of environmental radioactivity in the vicinity of the nuclear installations Brunsbüttel, Brokdorf, Krümmel, and Stade in the states Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony from 24 to 27 September 2012. Measurement flights were carried out along given paths at an altitude of 100 metres enabling radiological mapping of the above-mentioned measurement areas.

Measurement exercise 2011 in Baden-Württemberg

On behalf of the state Baden-Württemberg, the BfS and the Federal Police (Bundespolizei) carried out a joint exercise to detect and assess environmental radioactivity based on helicopter-borne measurements from 11 to 14 April 2011. This included radiological mapping of the sites of the nuclear facilities Neckarwestheim, Philippsburg and Obrigheim as well as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Campus Nord, on the initiative of, and in consultation with the Ministry of the Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector (Ministerium für Umwelt, Klima und Energiewirtschaft) in Baden-Württemberg.

Pursuant to the Precautionary Radiation Protection Act, the BfS is responsible for the large-scale measurement of environmental radioactivity and for the airborne detection of radiation sources. For this purpose, the Berlin and Munich sites have each two operational, ready-to-use, airworthy, gamma spectrometric measuring systems. In order to ensure their operational readiness, a joint measurement exercise of the BfS and the federal police force is carried out annually for which the federal police force or, respectively, disaster control helicopters are equipped with the BfS measuring systems.
