International measuring exercise 2017 in Switzerland

In order to be able to act swiftly and routinely in the event of an emergency, teams from four countries practised the joint measurement of radioactivity on the ground from a helicopter. Together with colleagues from Switzerland, France, and the Czech Republic, specialists of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) and the federal police force (BPol) took part in the international exercise "ARM 17" which was performed in Dübendorf, Switzerland, from 26 June to 30 June. The exercise was organised by the Swiss National Alarm Centre (NAZ).

Measurement exercise 2016 in Bavaria - Upper Franconia / Upper Palatinate

From 20 to 22 September 2016, a helicopter-borne measurement exercise was jointly conducted in the vicinity of Bayreuth by the BfS and the Federal Police in order to determine radioactive substances deposited on the ground. During the exercise, various flight procedures were tested and compared with one another. The radiation anomalies in the region known from earlier radiological surveys on the near-surface distribution of natural uranium and thorium were confirmed by the airborne gamma spectrometry surveys.

International measuring exercise 2015 in Germany

In June 2015, BfS and the Federal Police invited five European measuring teams to take part in a cross-border campaign for helicopter-borne measurements in the area of Saxony/Thuringia/Czech Republic. A number of measuring tasks had to be performed in order to optimise the interaction of different measuring teams and systems during the helicopter-borne determination of radiological soil contamination.

Measurement exercise 2014 in Saxony and Thuringia

The 2104 measurement exercise (airborne gamma spectrometry) jointly conducted by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) and the German Federal Police (Bundespolizei / BPOL) took place from 6 to 9 October in Saxony and Thuringia. Areas near Zwickau, Lengenfeld, Schneeberg, Freital, Johanngeorgenstadt, and Seelingstädt were overflown, for most of which radiological data had been mapped during previous measurement exercises. The BfS and BPOL conducted measurements near Lengenfeld and Freital already in 2003, and near Zwickau, Johanngeorgenstadt and Seelingstädt in 2003 and 2010.
