Hand-over of keys to the BfS extension
Hand-over of keys in front of the new BfS extension
The extension of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is largely completed. On 7 March, the Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben (BImA) as owner and constructor handed over the keys to the new building parts.
In future, the BfS will use the building together with the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BfE) and the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (BGE).
New building parts attached to the existing structure
Welcoming address of Wolfgang Blaurock (BImA)
"The new building blends harmoniously in the existing building, the selected surfaces and the large windows are a modern design feature," the Head of BfS Administration, Martina Hagemann, said in her welcoming address. Hagemann took over the keys from the BImA Chief of Facility Management, Wolfgang Blaurock. Also the city of Salzgitter, represented by CC Michael Tacke, welcomed the audience.
The new building parts have been attached to the existing structure. They accommodate mainly offices for about 155 employees as well as archive space and necessary technology areas and social rooms.
Ecological and sustainable design

The building was designed under ecological and sustainable aspects according to the Federal Guideline for Sustainable Building. The objective is the Certificate – Silver. The construction materials used and the technical equipment were chosen accordingly.
The extension is supplied by an own heat pump using underground pipes and a photovoltaic system. Both systems serve to cover the consumption of heat and electric energy. In the individual building parts, rooms can be provided with a basic temperature in the winter and can be cooled in the summer. Necessary ventilation systems in building parts C, D and E are equipped with a heat recovery system.
