Optical Radiation Climate change also entails higher UV radiation

Germany suffers a heatwave, and it has been going on for weeks. Scientists and environmentalists are warning of the irreversible consequences of climate change. However, there is one thing we often forget: Climate change also aggravates the problem of UV radiation. And just in these hot days many of us become aware that there is no tree in the proximity that might offer shade to protect us from the sun. The BfS wants to create better possibilities for people to protect themselves. This includes, among other things, more shady places.

Ionising radiation BfS brings together international expertise on biological dosimetry

To be able to effectively estimate the potential individual radiation dose received by as many affected persons as possible in the event of a major radiation accident, the RENEB network e.V was established in 2017 under the auspices of the BfS. Dr. Ulrike Kulka, head of the BfS section Biological Dosimetry, was elected Chairwoman at the network's first general meeting held on June 10, 2018, in Neuherberg.

Ionising radiation Wanted: Alternatives for high-radioactive sources

At an international meeting of experts taking place in Vienna on June 14 2018, experts, government representatives, and politicians discuss whether and how high-radioactive sources in areas such as medicine and industry can be replaced by alternatives. The objective is to reduce the risk resulting from radioactive sources. For the first time, Germany, represented by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), chairs the meeting in co-operation with the USA and France.

Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze visits the BfS

On 24 May 2018, Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze visited the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) at its headquarters in Salzgitter. BfS President Inge Paulini welcomed the Minister on her inaugural visit. She appreciated that Svenja Schulze had come to get a personal impression of her subordinate authority quite soon after taking office and regarded this visit as a good start for future cooperation.

Optical Radiation Beware! Risk of sunburn

Currently, ozone-poor air-masses at high altitude are flowing over Europe. As a result, clearly enhanced values of sunburn-effective UV radiation must be expected in Germany. Today and in the following days, the UV index may reach a value of 5 in northern Germany and up to 7 in southern Germany. Thus, the UV irradiance is much higher than usual at this time of year.
