The BfS Coordinating Offices

The tasks of the Coordinating Offices are laid down in the Precautionary Radiation Protection Act (StrVG) and in the Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrlSchV). Among other things, these include verifying the measurement data collected as part of environmental monitoring (AVV-IMIS) in accordance with StrVG and as part of emission and immission monitoring (REI) in accordance with StrlSchV as well as summarising and documenting these data. After a transitional period StrVG and StrlSchV will be replaced by the Radiation Protection Act (StrlSchG) which entered into force in July 2017.

The Coordinating Offices

The radioactive fallout through the atmospheric nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s and 1960s required monitoring of the impact on humans and the environment by radioactivity. Radioactive substances in the environment are monitored by the federal states (Bundesländer) and by federal authorities. At the same time Coordinating Offices have been established, which are responsible for the monitoring of specific environmental media.

Radioecology laboratory

The radioecology laboratory measures the radioactive contamination in foods and environmental media, conducts field investigations and laboratory experiments and develops radiochemical methods for the quick determination of alpha and beta emitters in foods and environmental media.

Coordinating Office ENORM

The Coordinating Office for questions of radioactivity monitoring in the event of enhanced natural radioactivity (Coordinating Office ENORM) was established in 2002. For methodical-analytical works various laboratories are available at the Berlin site such as sample preparation centre, gamma spectrometry laboratory, radon calibration laboratory and service centre dosimetry.
