Ionising radiation Practising radioactivity measurements from the air

From 15 to 18 June, measurement experts from different countries will use helicopters to determine the radioactivity at ground level in parts of Saxony, Thuringia and the Czech Republic. These measurement flights are part of an international exercise hosted by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) and the Flight Service of the German Federal Police (BPOLFLD), in close cooperation with the Czech Institute for Radiation Protection (SÚRO).

Ionising radiation Helicopter exercise: Federal Office for Radiation Protection and German Federal Police Air Service measure radioactivity from the air

From 8 to 10 October 2013, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) and the German Federal Police Air Service (BPOLFLD) will train environmental radioactivity measurements from a helicopter in a joint exercise in Rhineland Palatinate, Hesse and Saarland. The exercise is a precautionary measure: With such measures, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection and the German Federal Police Air Service can determine the distribution of radioactive material in the environment quickly and over large areas in case of emergency. That may become necessary, for example, if radioactive material is released in case of an accident in a nuclear power plant.

Electromagnetic fields Environment and children's health – growing up healthier

Polluted air in schools may directly affect children's health. At the start of the school year, after school buildings have been remediated or renovated, classrooms may be chemically polluted. As in schools and day-care facilities many persons stay in tight spaces, the concentration of carbon diox-ide may rise quickly, too. Therefore, airing is of the essence.
