BfS recommends protection from sunburn

UVI-values to remain very high for the next few days

The sun has fundamental importance for life on Earth. Sonne Fotografie

Due to the current weather conditions, UV-radiation is expected to be very strong up to the weekend in Germany.
The UV index (UVI) is a measure of the power of solar radiation. It can reach a value of 8, or even 9 in the South, today and over the next few days.

With values like this, you can get sunburnt even at a very short time spent in the sun. Since sunburns increase the risk to develop skin cancer, sun protection is strongly advised as set out below:

  • Seek shade –especially during the midday hours from 11 am to 3 pm. With a UVI of 8 or more you should stay in the shade as much as possible and stay indoors between 11 am and 3 pm.
  • Wear protective clothing, as well as a hat to protect the ears and neck, too.
  • Wear sunglasses appropriate to completely block out up to 400 nm of UV radiation, ideally wrap-around design sunglasses or sunglasses with side panels.
  • Generously apply sunscreen with sufficient sun protection factor to all exposed skin.
  • Take particular care to protect children – adherence to the recommendations for sun protection is vital for children. Babies should never be left in direct sunlight.
