Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze visits the BfS

BfS President Inge Paulini welcomes Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection in Salzgitter on 24 May 2018

On 24 May 2018, Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze visited the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) at its headquarters in Salzgitter.

BfS President Inge Paulini welcomed the Minister on her inaugural visit. She appreciated that Svenja Schulze had come to get a personal impression of her subordinate authority quite soon after taking office and regarded this visit as a good start for future cooperation.

A staff meeting was convened during which Svenja Schulze also introduced herself to the BfS employees. Ms. Schulze emphasised the importance of protecting the population and the environment against all types of radiation. She added that the Radiation Protection Act and the new Radiation Protection Ordinance, which is supposed to be adopted by the end of this year, would bring many new or substantially expanded tasks for the BfS.

These include the development of the Federal Radiological Situation Centre and the protection of the population against radon, but also protection against non-ionising radiation – including in the expansion of electricity networks, in mobile communications or generally in the course of digitisation – as well as occupational radiation protection. She was looking forward to a good cooperation, the Minister said. She confirmed that she would do everything in her power to deal with the subject area of radiation protection.

Svenja Schulze was appointed Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety in March 2018.
