What principles are used in radiation protection? What is ALARA?
The radiation protection system is based on the following three general principles:
- Justification
- Dose limitation
- Optimisation.
Optimisation demands that radiation exposure has to be reduced, even when below dose limits or constraints, taking into account societal and economic factors. "ALARA" ("As Low As Reasonably Achievable") is the internationally used acronym for this obligation.
