Morsleben Repository Morsleben – A mine? A German place

For the first time, interested citizens have access to a comprehensive permanent exhibition where they can get a glimpse at the eventful history of the Morsleben mine. Wolfram König, the BfS president, and Roland Jahn, the Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former GDR, opened the exhibition on the mine's over-hundred-year-old history at the BfS information centre at the Morsleben repository.

Morsleben Repository Morsleben repository: Gate damaged during fire drill

During a routine inspection of the fire protection system in the Morsleben repository, a fire protection gate was damaged on 30 August 2013. The inspection included closing the gate through remote control. In this process a transport vehicle collided with the gate. The vehicle driver remained uninjured.

Morsleben Repository Beendorf salt pile not suitable for backfilling of Morsleben

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) has conducted examinations of the around 100-year-old salt pile in Beendorf. The examinations have shown that the pile material cannot be used for the production of salt concrete for the backfilling of the repository.

Morsleben Repository Refurbishment of the hosting tower facade in Morsleben

The hoisting tower of the Morsleben repository which houses the main rope winding installation of the Bartensleben shaft and is visible from far away, is being refurbished and has been scaffolded for this purpose. On account of its exposed situation, the façade of the steel frame construction is exposed to extreme weather conditions, thus parts of it being substantially damaged after 35 years.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
