On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Current works

Here the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) provides information about current events and dates relating to the Morsleben repository.

These questions are answered here.

Information about current works and the current status of the plan-approval procedure is available at the BfS information centre in Morsleben.

On a regular basis, the BfS also provides information about these topics in the scope of the event series "Concerning Morsleben". Works relating to the general topic of operational safety and radiation protection are presented in an extra brochure.

Decommissioning conceptLarge-scale project vertical sealing element

The concept for the decommissioning of the repository contains three vertical sealing elements made from different materials for each shaft, Bartensleben and Marie. In mining practice, clay seals have been used for years for the sealing of shafts. Sealing elements for shafts from gravel and bitumen or, respectively, asphalt are new developments, however. In the large-scale project in the Morsleben repository, findings from laboratory and technical trials (prototypes at a scale of 1:3 up to 1:5) and from a large-scale project at the surface will be adapted to the conditions in situ.

Morsleben RepositoryBuilding a new workshop

A new workshop is currently being built for the safe operation of the repository until its decommissioning. It is located on the 2nd level near the shaft in a part of the mine which will be the last one to be sealed in the scope of decommissioning. The previous workshop is located in the control area of the repository. Its operation is not cost efficient, since vehicles need to be cleared after they have been maintained and/or repaired, which is costly and time-consuming. Only then are they allowed to leave the control area of the repository.

Morsleben RepositoryRefurbishment of the hoisting tower facade in Bartensleben (completed)

Because of its age, the hoisting tower facade did no longer perform its function. The progressive damage to the structure made its remediation absolutely necessary. The hoisting plant was insulated and a facade of sheet metal was placed on its front. The measure has been completed. It leads to a calculated energy saving of over 200,000 kWh per year. The construction cost ca. 590,000 euros.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
