Apart from the radioactive waste disposed of, there is also stored intermediately waste in the Morsleben repository for radioactive waste. This waste consists of radium-226 waste and of mainly cobalt-60 radiation sources. Measured by volume, the intermediately stored waste covers only a negligible portion of the radioactive waste (less than 0.01 per cent). Still, it represents ca. two thirds of the emplaced activity (170,000 gigabecquerel; as of the end of 2014).
Many citizens question:
- What is the origin of the intermediately stored waste in the Morsleben repository?
- Why has the waste not been disposed of?
- What is the licensing situation?
- How is it guaranteed that the intermediately stored waste can be retrieved?
- How does the BfS handle the intermediately stored waste in the framework of decommissioning the repository?
These and other questions were dealt with in the scope of the event series "Concerning Morsleben" on 17 March 2015 at the Morsleben information centre. The new project manager Matthias Ranft and Dr. Jürgen Gerler gave the lecture.
The members of the Morsleben information centre are available for questions or additional information.
