Refurbishment of the hoisting tower facade in Bartensleben (completed)

The ca. 44-metre-high hoisting tower of the Bartensleben mine was constructed from 1975 to 1978. It consists of a steel skeleton structure with roofs of reinforced concrete, the facade consists of a steel framework structure with an infill of brick masonry.

Apart from the hoisting plant, there are a passenger lift and a staircase in the hoisting tower, as well as rooms for technical equipment. A multi-purpose building is right beside the hoisting tower, hosting, among others, change and wash houses, the lamp room, measurement rooms and the mine rescue station.

Due to its age and location where it was exposed to wind and weather, the facade had no longer fully performed its function prior to remediation. When it was raining, water penetrated the facade and collected in the steel profiles of the steel framework structure. Frost led to chipping in the brickwork. The progressive damage to the structure made it thus absolutely necessary to remediate the facade.

The objective of the remediation was to maintain the functioning of the facade and simultaneously reduce the energy demand by means of thermal insulation.

Completed works

The remediation of the hoisting tower of the Bartensleben mine was successfully completed in the middle of 2014. The insulation of the facade has led to an energy saving of over 200,000 kWh per year. The measure cost ca. 590,000 euros.

Licensing procedure

The licences under nuclear, mining and building law were granted in the years 2012 and 2013. Competent authorities for this were the BfS Repository Surveillance Unit, the rural district of Börde and the Landesamt für Geologie und Bergwesen Sachsen-Anhalt (LAGB).

Since 2009, a peregrine falcon has bred in the hoisting tower. The Arbeitskreis Wanderfalkenschutz installed a new incubator for the falcon in 2011. Peregrine falcons are endangered in their existence. The LAGB therefore also involved the State Administration Department Saxony-Anhalt in the licensing procedure, as the superior nature conservation authority.

Remediation of the facade

Prior to the actual remediation, the complete hoisting tower was scaffolded. Subsequently loose parts of brickwork were removed from the facade, before it was insulated with plates of mineral wool.

The substructure of the curtain wall consists of steel support brackets. These have been mounted to flat steel link plates that have been attached directly at the steel girders of the hoisting tower’s framework construction or, respectively, directly at the brickwork. The hanging facade itself consists of steel metals.

The remediation of the façade started in October 2013 and concluded in the middle of 2014. Altogether about 2,250 square metres of facade surface were insulated and provided with a hanging facade. To protect the peregrine falcon, construction measures were adapted to its mating and breeding season.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
