On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. At the INFO MORSLEBEN the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) provides information about the decommissioning of the Morsleben repository for radioactive waste, using presentation charts and modern computer animations. The planned construction measures within the scope of decommissioning are explained as well as the long-term safety and monitoring measures for the protection of the population and the environment. The geological conditions and the mine's history are presented there, too.

In the showroom and the lecture hall of the info centre visitors are offered space for exchanging information and discussing their questions with the BfS personnel. Lectures, briefings, and discussions can take place here.

The INFO MORSLEBEN staff are looking forward to your questions. Upon request, the staff are also available for doing presentations at schools or events.

In exceptional cases, the information centre may be closed during regular opening hours for operational reasons, for example during visits to the mine underground. We kindly ask you to take this into account and, if possible, make an appointment for your visit in due time.

Permanent exhibition

Morsleben - A mine? A German place.

Invitation to the exhibition "Morsleben – A mine? A German place." New permanent exhibition at INFO MORSLEBENInsight into the colourful history of the Morsleben repository

The Morsleben repository for radioactive waste, for which the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) has had the operator's responsibility since the reunification, had a colourful past as a mine: Potash and rock salt mining, armaments production, livestock farming and toxic-waste dump in the GDR and, since 1979, radioactive waste repository.

In its various utilisation phases as a mine, the history of the Morsleben mine reflects the entire German history including forced labour of prisoners from concentration camps underground and the border location in the GDR. The BfS has faced the documentation of this history. The result is a new permanent exhibition.

According to the motto "Morsleben- A mine? A German place." the exhibition narrates and analyses the facility's overall development as a whole until this day. The presentation was designed and drawn up with the assistance of an expert advisory board. The permanent exhibition can be visited during the regular opening hours at INFO MORSLEBEN.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
