Unpleasant, difficult and necessary: For quite some time, the question of an interim storage facility for the waste from the Asse mine has been important part of the debates between Asse 2 Accompanying Group, residents of the Asse region and the Federal Office for Radiation Protection. One particular reason for the new edition of "Insights Into the Asse Mine" was to represent central aspects with infographics.

Measurements available after incident in bore hole

In the process of the post-examinations, radiation protection officers of the Asse-GmbH detected about 10 litres of solution with high caesium activity levels. This was the result of measurements in a bore hole where contaminated debris had been detected in November 2013. The BfS had reported about the incident. The measurements concluded recently. The BfS informed the Asse-2 Monitoring Group about the measurement results on 7 March 2014. The solution and the radioactivity contained therein does not pose a risk to the workers and the environment and does not have any negative effects on the planning of retrieval.

Decommissioning BfS presents updated report on retrieval plans

On the occasion of the visit paid by Federal Environment Minister Dr. Barbara Hendricks, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection published an overall presentation of the retrieval plans for the Asse II mine. The objective of the overall presentation is to give a survey of the current status of the project to the public. Thus the citizens will continue to be actively involved in the further decommissioning process through the questions they ask.

Asse mine All players together: Hendricks, Wenzel und Steinbrügge pay visit to Asse mine

"What could be better for an operator than all players being aware of their responsibility," Wolfram König, President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, thanked at the end of the visit of Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks to the Asse mine on 4 March 2014. nig welcomed the Minister in the morning at the Info Asse in Remlingen and guided her through the mine. Asse mine We can only do this together

"Insights into the Asse Mine" is published in a new format – five years after it was launched and after the federal government had transferred the operator's responsibility for the Asse II mine to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection. The layout and magazine format provide space for more charts, interviews, small and large articles and pictures. Comprehensive information about all topics concerning the Asse II mine will also be provided in future.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
