On the occasion of the visit paid by Federal Environment Minister Dr. Barbara Hendricks, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection published an overall presentation of the retrieval plans for the Asse II mine.

On about 30 pages, the report provides an easy to understand and updated presentation of the Asse decommissioning project including numerous graphs and figures. It ranges from salt mining at the Asse mountain range to the current works on preparing the retrieval of the radioactive waste.

The presentation documents the geological and mining conditions and thus clarifies the challenges of works in a mine that is over one hundred years old. The process that has led to the decision in favour of the recovery of the radioactive waste is demonstrated, as is the complex interaction between stabilisation measures and preparation of retrieval. The publication shows successes but also risks and uncertainties which must not be neglected in this project that is unparalleled in the world.

The objective of the overall presentation is to give a survey of the current status of the project to the public. Thus the citizens will continue to be actively involved in the further decommissioning process through the questions they ask.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
