The latest edition of "Insights into the Asse Mine" addresses the difficult search for an interim storage facility

Front page of "Insights into the Asse Mine 23" Insights Into the Asse Mine 23"Insights Into the Asse Mine No. 23" (December 2013)

"Insights into the Asse Mine" is published in a new format – five years after it was launched and after the federal government had transferred the operator's responsibility for the Asse II mine to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection. The layout and magazine format provide space for more charts, interviews, small and large articles and pictures. Comprehensive information about all topics concerning the Asse II mine will also be provided in future.

In this edition the journalist Dagmar Dehmer describes the difficult search for an interim storage facility for the Asse waste. In a double interview, Landrätin Christiana Steinbrügge and BfS President Wolfram König discuss the process of communication between the general public and the BfS, which is often not very easy.

New context-related challenges

"After a five-year-lasting accompanying process we are facing new context-related challenges", Wolfram König reviews. Whereas in the past deficiencies had to be cleared up, a phase starts now which demands a lot from all parties involved. This concerns the discussion about stabilisation measures but also the debate about the planned interim storage facility for Asse waste. In the "Insights into the Asse Mine", both Steinbrügge and König argue in favour of more fairness and co-operation in the discussion about the Asse II mine. "We need to listen to all opinions but also note that not all parties involved see themselves as experts", Landrätin Christiana Steinbrügge adds.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
