On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

event Asse: Caught between interests, responsibility and action

In what tension field the Asse project is caught was discussed on Tuesday, 29 November 2016 by Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter, the Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Environment Ministry, Wolfram König, President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, and Hans-Albert Lennartz, commercial manager of Asse-GmbH, in the Media House of Braunschweiger Zeitungsverlag.

event “Concerning: Asse”: BfS informs about the status of work for emergency prepardness

“Establishing emergency preparedness” – What exactly does that mean? That the Asse II mine might drown is a generally known fact. On the other hand, fewer citizens know what the consequences of this would be and what the Federal Office for Radiation Protection and the Asse-GmbH are constantly doing in order for this emergency not to occur or for its consequences to be minimised. For this reason, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) provides information about the current works and plans for the establishment of emergency preparedness. This will be done on Thursday, 31 July 2014, at 7 p.m.

event “Concerning Asse”: BfS series of events provides information about the partial project Fact-Finding on 8 May

A little-known aspect: The fact-finding does not only refer to the drilling work at the emplacement chambers underground but also to a large number of data, files and photos from the time the waste was stored. Parallel to the running, underground work, experts have evaluated these facts and gained many new findings. In addition to the data from the test drillings, the results are also crucial for the further planning of retrieval. For this occasion, the BfS invites interested citizens to get an idea of the current state of the fact-finding on 8 May 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Info-Asse.

event Technical challenges of retrieval: BfS invites to expert meeting

The expert meeting takes place on 13 February 2014 at Lindenhalle in Wolfenbüttel. Key issues to be dealt with are questions around the technical options to recover the radioactive waste. Furthermore, the BfS seeks an open, professional dialogue with external experts on challenges to the retrieval project on the grounds of rock mechanics and inflow of water.

event Asse expert workshop: Radiation protection and emergency preparedness on 20 and 21 November 2012

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) invites to a public briefing about “Asse mine: Radiation protection and emergency preparedness”. It takes place on Friday, 23 November, at 5 p.m. in the Stadthalle Braunschweig (Congress Saal).

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
