On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Radiation protection Interim storage of saline solution above ground terminated

The interim storage of the saline solution in containers on the premises of Asse-GmbH has been terminated. In the so-called Baker containers, approximately 800 cubic metres of saline solution were stored since October 2008.

Asse mine Asse is supplied with construction material for stabilisation

Since this week, Asse GmbH has been supplied with salt which is used for producing a special type of concrete. With the concrete residual cavities (so-called roof clefts) are backfilled which had formed since the chambers had previously been backfilled with loose salt powder.

Radiation protection Application for the handling of contaminated substances

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) wishes to newly regulate the handling of contaminated substances in Asse.

Radiation protection Directive on compensation

As a consequence of the discussions about the safety of the Asse II mine, pecuniary damage in the form of considerable asset losses for companies may have occurred in the vicinity of the mine. For this purpose, according to the requirements set out in a Directive which can be found on the BfS homepage www.bfs.de, compensation can be granted in case pecuniary damage has occurred in the form of considerable asset losses.

Asse mine Saline solutions stored underground reused

Since 20 October 2009, eight containers of the Bakercorp company have initially been removed from the Asse mine premises. In the containers, the saline solution had been stored that had still been collected by the former operator but could not be taken to other mines any longer. Prior to transport, the empty containers were cleaned and decontaminated. They may leave the premises since it can be proved with the release measurement that they are not contaminated with radioactive substances. The saline solutions previously stored in the containers have meanwhile been used for construction works in the mine.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
