Saline solutions stored underground reused

Asse GmbH has containers no longer used removed.

Since 20 October 2009, eight containers of the Bakercorp company have initially been removed from the Asse mine premises. In the containers, the saline solution had been stored that had still been collected by the former operator but could not be taken to other mines any longer. Prior to transport, the empty containers were cleaned and decontaminated. They may leave the premises since it can be proved with the release measurement that they are not contaminated with radioactive substances. The saline solutions previously stored in the containers have meanwhile been used for construction works in the mine.

With a radioactive exposure of 300 – 400 Bq/l, the saline solutions are far below the permissible limit values (above 100,000 Bq/l). Thus, they can be disposed of conventionally. However, they are not in compliance with the requirements of the voluntary negotiated environmental agreement of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, according to which the radiation exposure of the influent saline solutions must be reduced to an absolute minimum. The saline solutions are used for mixing Sorel concrete which is needed for works in the mine.

Currently, there are still six other containers on the premises whose content will soon be processed. Another four containers have already been emptied and are being prepared for transport.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
