On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Asse mine Asse: Criticism expressed by citizens’ initiatives not comprehensible

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) objects to the criticism expressed by the Asse-II Coordination Committee (AK2). The allegation that BfS has misled the public is dishonest. None of the statements made by AK2 on the occasion of the press conference on 4 January 2010 bears close examination.

Radioactive waste Asse GmbH delivers no longer needed radiation sources to Federal State Collecting Depot

On 15 December, Asse GmbH delivered radioactive operational waste to the Federal State Collecting Depot in Jülich. The delivered radiation sources do not belong to the waste emplaced in Asse.

Decommissioning BfS improves stability of Asse

Radiation protection No enhanced radioactive exposure in the vicinity of Asse

There is no enhanced radioactive exposure in the vicinity of the Asse mine in the rural district of Wolfenbüttel. That is the result of an interim report presented by LUFA Nord-West (Landwirtschaftliche Untersuchungs- und Forschungsanstalt der Landwirtschaftskammer Niedersachsen) and the Braunschweig district office of the Landwirtschaftskammer Niedersachsen.

Decommissioning Further suggestions are to be included in Asse decommissioning options

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is currently examining the three decommissioning options of retrieval, relocation, and complete backfilling for the Asse mine. It had been planned to present the result of this decision-making process to the public still in this year. BfS complies with the request of, among others, the Asse II Accompanying Group to examine further suggestions and references and to come to an agreement.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
