On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

event Safe closure of the Asse repository can be accelerated

Works on the safe closure of the Asse mine can be accelerated. That is the result of the two-day expert workshop which the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) had invited experts to and which took place in Wolfenbüttel on 24 and 25 September 2012. In a constructive and solution-oriented atmosphere, 110 experts from all over the country discussed concrete options to accelerate the decommissioning of Asse.

event Results of the BfS workshop on Asse

Upon invitation of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), about 100 experts discussed a possible acceleration of the retrieval of radioactive waste from the Asse mine on 18 and 19 January 2012 in Braunschweig. The expert workshop has not provided findings that call the retrieval of the waste into question.

event “Since we took over the facility we can rule out a risk for the Asse staff”

What has the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) achieved today with respect to the safe decommissioning of the Asse repository? That was the question the BfS gave answers to at its public briefing which took place last Thursday in Wolfenbüttel. Around 70 citizens came to the Lindenhalle to catch up on the Asse issue.

event BfS wants a seismic exploration of the Asse

Next year, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) intends to conduct seismic measurements in the area of the Asse II mine. With the help of 3-D seismic measurements, a more detailed knowledge of the mine shall be gained. The measurements will take around three months; results should be available in 2013 at the latest. Preliminary work is currently carried out by Gesellschaft für Geowissenschaftliche Dienste from Leipzig (GGD). In a public information meeting held on 3 June in the Remlingen village community centre, citizens had the opportunity to get extensive information about the project.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
