“Concerning Asse”: BfS series of events provides information about the partial project Fact-Finding on 8 May

begin 2014.05.08 07:00 PM
end 2014.05.08
location Remlingen

A little-known aspect: The fact-finding does not only refer to the drilling work at the emplacement chambers underground but also to a large number of data, files and photos from the time the waste was stored. Parallel to the running, underground work, experts have evaluated these facts and gained many new findings. In addition to the data from the test drillings, the results are also crucial for the further planning of retrieval. For this occasion, the BfS invites interested citizens to get an idea of the current state of the fact-finding on 8 May 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Info-Asse.

Like in the previous information event on the topic “Asse recovery shaft”, citizens are to get again a kind of “view on the work bench”. A number of exciting questions are dealt with: How can single photos that have not been marked precisely be allocated to the emplacement chambers? How exactly were the drums emplaced at the time? What results have been found after the first test drillings? What information may be crucial for the planning of retrieval?

The fact-finding – also referred to as trial phase – is considered a key element in the retrieval of the radioactive waste from the Asse mine. In the first phase, experts explore the state of the emplacement chambers and the atmosphere therein with the help of drillings. Only after this phase has concluded, can they plan how the emplacement chambers can be opened and first drums can be recovered.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
