Asse: Caught between interests, responsibility and action
Information event of the Federal Environment Ministry, BfS and Asse GmbH on the decommissioning of the Asse mine
end 2016.11.29
location Media house of Braunschweiger Zeitungsverlag
It is often like trying to square the circle: On the one hand there is need for action – the radioactive wastes should be recovered as soon as possible. Because it cannot be ruled out that the Asse mine will drown. On the other hand, that is the reason why the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) as responsible operator must secure the mine, which costs time and is considered by some people contradictive to the planning of retrieval.
Combining these high demands and different interests is not only ambitious but has also a formative influence on the discussions between all actors involved in the decommissioning of the Asse mine: Whether in the debates about the planned Asse interim storage facility, emergency planning or the construction of the recovery shaft.
In what tension field the Asse project is caught was discussed on 29 November 2016 by
- Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Environment Ministry,
- Wolfram König, President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, as well as
- Hans-Albert Lennartz, commercial manager of Asse-GmbH.
