Learning from experience

The 25th edition of "Insights Into the Asse Mine" provides information about current works and looks back on the search for a repository

Learning from experience – that applies to both the restart of the nation-wide search for a repository for high-level radioactive waste and for the works currently being carried out at the Asse II min.

The journalist Joachim Wille has been dealing with the topic of nuclear policy for years. For "Insights Into the Asse Mine", he looks back and shows what needs to be observed when the search for a radioactive waste repository is restarted and what can be learnt from the past.

Status of works: Trial phase, recovery shaft and interim storage facility

The works relating to the Trial Phase (fact-finding) that have been carried out so far have provided new knowledge of the emplacement chambers. At the same time the following has likewise become clear: The Trial Phase requires significantly more work and time than has been assumed previously. It is necessary to continuously monitor the extent and implementation of the works.

The exploration drilling for the planned recovery shaft from the surface has concluded – an important milestone. However: A decision on the site's suitability can only be taken once the results from the drilling underground (cf. chart) are available.

Three fictitious sites in comparison – an info chart (in German only) illustrates the procedure with the help of which the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) wants to answer open questions of radiation exposure: What will be the exposure level emitted by the interim storage facility? What will be the exposure level to the staff? What is the exposure level of a transport? The approach applied in the search for an interim storage facility is currently being discussed with the Asse-II Accompanying Group.

"Insights Into the Asse Mine" – a magazine about topics around the Asse II mine

"Insights Into the Asse Mine" has been distributed since 2009 as supplement of Braunschweiger Zeitung and Wolfenbütteler Schaufenster. Publisher is the BfS. On a regular basis, the magazine informs about topics around the Asse II mine. "Insights Into the Asse Mine" combines journalistic requirements in terms of the form it is presented and diversity of opinion as well of the concern of the BfS public relations to present the knowledge of its own experts in a comprehensible and easy to understand manner.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
