New videos on retrieval
“Cold trial” and “test phase” are depicted
With two new videos (in German), citizens are able to relate to how the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is preparing for retrieving the waste from the Asse mine. In the first video, the so-called cold trial is explained, the second film shows the three-year-lasting test phase. According to the present state of knowledge, the Asse can be safely closed only if the radioactive and chemo-toxic waste will be retrieved from the repository.
With the cold trial, the BfS is preparing for drilling into the first emplacement chamber. Equipment and measuring methods need to be tested before one can actually start drilling. In the test phase, the BfS can then drill into the first chambers, open them and recover some waste with the help of remote-controlled techniques. With the test phase, the BfS mainly wishes to gain knowledge as to what radiation exposure the miners will actually have to reckon with when retrieving the waste and how much time needs to be scheduled for the recovery.
