On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Asse mine New video on stabilisation measures

As a result of the deformation of the mine cracks form through which more water can flow into the mine. By filling roof gaps and old blind shafts the BfS is trying to stabilise the mine and to work against further crack formation. The film (in German) shows the efforts associated with these stabilisation measures.

Cracks in mining district 3 on the 490-m level have opened further

Routine measurements in mining district 3 on the 490-m level have shown that the cracks in the dams between the reservoirs have opened further. Since the roof under mining district 3/490 is damaged, stabilisation measures are already taking place directly underneath on the 511-m level. The cavity there between roof and salt deposit (roof cleft) in district 3 has already been backfilled with Sorel concrete.

Background: Micro-seismic events in the Asse overburden

Between 19 and 27 January 2011, a microseismic incident accumulation occurred in the overburden in front of mining districts 3 and 4 in a depth of ca. 500 metres. The number of incidents increased further until 31 January. The staff and the operational safety are not at risk. Similar occurrences were also observed in the past.

Increased inflow of saline solution in front of chamber 8

According to most recent measurements, the volume of the radioactively contaminated saline solution being collected in front of emplacement chamber 8 on the 750-m level of the Asse mine has increased from four to eight litres per day compared to the volume measured half a year ago.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
