Cracks in mining district 3 on the 490-m level have opened further

Routine measurements in mining district 3 on the 490-m level have shown that the cracks in the dams between the reservoirs have opened further. Since the roof under mining district 3/490 is damaged, stabilisation measures are already taking place directly underneath on the 511-m level. The cavity there between roof and salt deposit (roof cleft) in district 3 has already been backfilled with Sorel concrete.

These operations must carry on in order for the roof being stabilised as soon as possible. In the reservoirs in mining district 3, influent solution is stored temporarily. Only one out of three containers is currently used. To secure the containers, they have already been coated with new lining and have additionally been equipped with a leakage warning system. One will continue to monitor the place intensely.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
