Compensation and replacement measures for the construction of the Konrad repository
As compensation for the development of green space in the scope of constructing the Konrad repository, the nuclear licence (plan-approval decision) issued by the Lower Saxon Environment Ministry provides for the implementation of several compensation and replacement measures. The first measure will be to convert an arable area to the north of Salzgitter-Üfingen to grassland and to reforest part of it.
Plan-approval decision requires compensation and replacement measures
The construction of the repository for low-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste represents an intrusion in the natural environment and the countryside. In the process of converting the former Konrad iron ore mine to a repository for low-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste, new infrastructure installations and surface installations are constructed and thus green space is developed. The plan-approval decision for the Konrad repository provides for the implementation of compensation and replacement measures.
Compensating the loss of green space
In order to compensate the loss of green space, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) purchased a 6.3 hectare large field by Salzgitter-Üfingen, which had lain fallow for several years. The field is located between the rainwater retention basins and sedimentation tanks of the Salzgitter AG and Salzgitter-Üfingen. It is planned to plant alder trees and single groups of local tree species as well as to landscape the terrain.
