On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Konrad Repository Safety analysis: waste transports to the Konrad final repository pose no risk

The transportation of radioactive waste to the Konrad final repository poses no risk to the population, transportation staff, or the environment. This is the conclusion of a safety analysis conducted by the Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS); the findings apply not only to normal transport activities but also to any potential accidents which may occur as a result. The "Konrad Transport Study 2009" thus confirms calculations produced by the GRS as long ago as 1991 on behalf of the Federal Ministry of the Environment and the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS).

Konrad Repository Open communication with respect to the Konrad repository - BfS opens INFO KONRAD

From the end of 2013, the Konrad repository near the town of Salzgitter is supposed to be used for waste with no significant heat generation. Since 15 May 2008, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) endeavours to inform the public at its dedicated information centre in the heart of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt.

Konrad Repository Main operating plan for the construction of the Konrad repository adopted

The "Main operating plan for the construction of the Konrad repository", filed by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) on 16 Oct 2007, has now been approved by the Office for Mining, Energy and Geology. The main operating plan makes it possible to perform the required mining and construction work, which is a decisive step in the process of transforming the Konrad mine into a repository for low-level and medium-level radioactive waste.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
