More than 700 people visited the exhibition in the Wolfenbüttel town hall dealing with the decommissioning of the Asse II mine. In the last two weeks of November, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) used the exhibition as an opportunity for answering questions about Asse. Visitors who are not able to come to the Asse Info Centre in Remlingen particularly use the opportunity to read up on the history, the present state, and the decommissioning options.“We are pleased that our offer of information is of interest to so many people,” a BfS spokesman said.“Everyone should understand what happens in Asse.”

Interested persons could get an idea of the mine, among others, with the help of filmlets and a three-dimensional model of Asse. Until the end of the year, BfS intends to evaluate three decommissioning options and recommend a decision. Currently, it is being intensively examined whether the waste will be retrieved, whether it will be relocated inside the mine, or whether the mine will be backfilled with a special type of concrete. Experts of the scientific departments currently examine with the help of 18 criteria which of the three options will be best suitable.

In detail and comprehensively, BfS provides the population with information about all decommissioning steps. So far, BfS has already provided information in flyers about how a decommissioning option is chosen, where radioactive waste is stored in Germany, where the nuclear waste in Asse originates from, which decommissioning options there are, what path the influent saline solutions take into Asse, and how the mine’s interior looks like. Likewise, the emergency plan and a time schedule of Asse are depicted. All flyers and info brochures are available at the Asse Info Centre. Upon request, they will be forwarded free of charge.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
