Following leakage of saline solutions, BfS lowers water level in interim reservoir
Date 2009.01.22
During the preparation of the new management of the influent saline solutions in the Asse II mine, water leaked from an interim reservoir on the 658-m level. The saline solutions which had no contact to radioactive waste were collected beside the reservoir (so far ca. 2.5 cubic metres). This was caused by leakages at the top of the interim reservoir which has been lined with foil. As a consequence, BfS initiated a lowering of the water level in the interim reservoir by some centimetres following an inspection of the location together with Asse GmbH and Landesamt für Bergbau, Energie und Geologie (LBEG). For this purpose, 10 cubic metres of influent saline solution are pumped into a close-by steel tank. The procedure has been coordinated with LBEG. It does not require a special licence.
After having introduced the new management, the saline solutions flowing into Asse can again be taken to other mines for further use. Interim storage on the 658-m level will then no longer be necessary, either.
