BfS explores near-surface rock layers of the Asse mine
To gather additional findings about the upper rock layers, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is going to carry out 40 smaller drillings near the surface in the months to come. Work will start on 16 November and will probably conclude in spring 2016.
The drillings will reach a depth of 20 metres and are therefore termed shallow drillings. The exploration work extends over an area from Groß Denkte via Wittmar and the Asse II mine to Klein Vahlberg. They are performed with mobile equipment. Immediately after having taken the samples, the holes will be backfilled and their original state will be restored.
With the help of the drillings it will be examined, among others, whether the geological information available to date is correct. The project is part of the exploration measures carried out by the BfS in the context of the Asse II mine’s decommissioning and the retrieval of the radioactive wastes.
