As of now, youths from age 16 can visit the mine

As of now, youths can experience first-hand the challenges and conditions in the Asse project.

The mine is now also open to visits by young persons from age 16 if they have a written declaration of consent of their parents. This enables an improved radiation protection management which was introduced to the Asse mine by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS).

Improved radiation protection management

Following the change of operatorship in 2009, the BfS had established the minimum age of 18 for visitors, for reasons of precaution. At the same time, the radiation protection management in the mine was fundamentally changed and improved.

Radiation protection officials established safety zones that are clearly separated from the rest of the mine openings. They are e.g. located where radioactively contaminated liquids occur or are stored. Visitors have no access to these rooms.

Radiation exposures during the tour through the mine are not expected. The guests carry a small measuring device for monitoring purposes.

Organisation and content of tours underground

Visitors can visit the mine from Monday to Friday between 11.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. In an introduction, staff of the Asse information centre provide information at the surface and accompany the groups underground. At the end of the visit there is sufficient time and space for final conversations and discussions.

Groups of up to 14 persons can register for a visit to the mine. Lead time for registrations is four to six weeks. Please let us therefore know as early as possible when you would like to visit the mine.

Please note that specific climatic conditions prevail underground that could strain the cardiovascular system (cf. visitors explanatory leaflet). It is essential that the visitors are basically fit, since part of the way needs to be walked on foot. You will find more information on visitor tours on our website at www.asse.bund.de at INFO ASSE – Booking Request or by phone or in situ at the INFO ASSE.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
