New name for Asse mine website

Asse website can be accessed at www.asse.bund.de

Since 21 October 2013, the digital information site on the decommissioning project can be accessed at www.asse.bund.de.

The contents can also still be accessed at the previous address www.endlager-asse.de. That means: Users need not store again the bookmarks they created on their computers with this address. Persons who enter the old address or click an older bookmark, will automatically be redirected to the new domain www.asse.bund.de.

In the past months, the BfS had been criticised partially for referring to the Asse II mine as "repository" in publications and in its name of the website. The BfS has set out the background of calling the Asse mine a repository, which was originally also demanded by citizens' initiatives.

Now the BfS has decided to do entirely without the term. This way, the challenges associated with the safe decommissioning of the Asse mine are to be in the fore again instead of leading further debates on the terminology.

The BfS will also do without the term "repository" in other publications such as brochures and internet articles. Already at the end of September, the federal authority changed the subtitle of its information bulletin "Insights into the Asse Mine". By and by, also the language of the computer animations, films and brochures on the Asse II mine topic will be adapted. Reports and publications that will not be updated will remain unaffected by the change.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
