New Technical Director for the Asse-GmbH starting on 15 March 2010

At the last works meeting, Jens Köhler (44) a certified mining engineer, was introduced as the new Technical Director for the Asse GmbH. He will replace Dr. Ulrich Kleemann, who held this position for the past year. Köhler takes office on the 15 March 2010. For the past seven years, he worked for a building company in Austria, which is involved in international tunnel and power plant construction.

"I am very pleased that we were able to recruit a renowned expert for the position of Technical Director for the Asse GmbH", announced Stefanie Nöthel, Vice President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) at Mr. Köhler's inauguration in Remlingen. Asse GmbH is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BfS.

As a Technical Director, Köhler managed for example a holding company in Bulgaria with more than 1,000 employees. He was also involved in the construction of a hydroelectric power plant and was faced with the geological and logistical challenges that are involved in the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which has a length of 57 km.

Köhler has enough professional expertise to be aware of the importance of open communication with citizens and to take into account their concerns. His last job was at the Office for Traffic Management Düsseldorf, where he worked as a senior site manager for the Werhahn subway line project.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
