Increased inflow of saline solutions in the Asse mine

In the process of an inspection, the Asse II mine operating company, Asse GmbH, detected an increase in influent saline solutions in the Asse mine. At the main point of inflow on the 658-m level, approximately 11.4 cubic metres of influent saline solutions were measures this morning for the past 24 hours. That means an increase of around one cubic metre compared with the day before. Similar volumes were already measured in 2003. Experts will continue to monitor the further inflow of saline solution and evaluate it under safety aspects. The way it is seen now, the increase does not have any safety-relevant effects. Fluctuations in the amounts of influent saline solutions can always occur.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
