On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Works for safe decommissioning

Laying of the decontaminable floor covering in front of emplacement chamber 7 started

This starts the setting-up of the devices. Only after the floor covering has been laid completely and has been approved by experts, can the actual setting-up begin. Now the measurement containers, the ventilation and filter technology and the tarpaulin-like separation can be built up. Later on the drilling area is to be separated from the residual mine through the radiation protection area.

Via a fan the air is then to be extracted and filtered from the work area. Extracting the air from the radiation protection area causes slightly low pressure in the entire drilling area. This is an additional safety measure that prevents possibly contaminated gases and dusts being released into the mine air. Before the floor covering could be laid, level foundations needed to be produced and first electrical installations to be concluded.

Testing of the drilling device successfully concluded

The operational trial (cold trial) has already concluded. In the course of this trial that took place between September 2010 and June 2011 the technical equipment and the protective gear were being tested and optimised for utilisation. Furthermore geophysical measuring methods were tested which were to provide information about cavities and the state of the rock. Once the operational trial (cold trial) on the 800-m level had concluded successfully, the drilling devices, the preventers and the container for the debris were set up. The components are currently being maintained in the underground workshops and prepared for their use in the trial phase.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
