Digital documentation system improves oversight and control of Konrad waste
- The BfS launches a new documentation system for the digital administration of waste that has undergone waste package quality control.
- The documentation system supports the call-off and emplacement planning.
The BfS digital documentation system provides for a better control of the stock, composition and packaging of the radioactive waste to be emplaced in the Konrad repository. Thus, the database makes an important contribution to the commissioning of the Konrad repository. The stored data provides quick and comprehensive information about the waste stock and about which containers are qualified according to the safety requirements and are packaged in a form suitable for disposal. The data is vital for the planning of a trouble-free delivery to the repository.
Waste package quality control for the Konrad repository
To be able to finally dispose of radioactive waste with negligible heat generation, the waste has to meet the requirements of the Konrad repository. Therefore, the waste producer must process the waste according to a qualified procedure and package it in tested containers. The BfS controls whether this waste is in compliance with the waste acceptance requirements.
The digital documentation system of waste package quality control
To describe the waste, the waste producers fill in a "waste data sheet" in which the necessary information is clearly summarised. The new documentation system saves this information. With simple queries one can control what kind of waste has been delivered and controlled and its status in the waste package quality control procedure. The system shows which and how much waste has been packaged in a manner that it can be stored. Recent data shows that so far only one per cent of the waste intended for the Konrad repository has been processed, packaged and released for delivery in compliance with the waste acceptance requirements.
Data provides basis for call-off logistics
The waste producers must not deliver the waste to the Konrad repository arbitrarily but the repository calls off the waste. Safety-related planning requires information about the waste. An important first basis for this provides the latest documentation system. It is planned to supplement the digital system by another program in order to optimise the logistics of waste delivery in future. In co-ordination with the waste producers, a call-off plan will be developed which will be examined and released by the extended documentation system.
