Who constructs and operates the Konrad repository
The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is a scientific-technical higher federal authority in the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) headquartered in Salzgitter. It works for the safety and protection of man and environment from damages due to ionising and non-ionising radiation.
The Federal Office for Radiation Protection was founded on 1 November 1989. It executes federal tasks in the field of radiation protection including precautionary radiation protection as well as nuclear safety, transport of radioactive materials and radioactive waste management including the construction and operation of federal facilities for long-term storage and disposal.
Support of the BMUB
The BfS provides professional and scientific support to the BMU in terms of these tasks, in particular with regard to the execution of federal supervision, the development of legal and administrative provisions and co-operation between States.
Manifold tasks
The Federal Office furthermore deals with radiation protection issues in medical diagnostics and therapy, effects of UV radiation, radiation exposure due to radon and the effects of electric and magnetic fields. The BfS examines and monitors the radiation exposure and evaluates health risks. A radiation protection register is kept for occupationally exposed persons, which ensures the individual registration of radiation exposures.
