On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. Konrad info centre welcomes 10,000th visitor

Since its opening in May 2008, around 10,000 interested visitors have used the Konrad info centre to obtain information about the intended Kornrad repository.

Yesterday, the info centre welcomed its 10,000th visitor, Ulrike Thomas (52) from Iserlohn. “My partner invited me here today” said Thomas before entering the Konrad mine. Of course, she had already concerned herself with the issue, so the visitor, “in particular, as the media bring up the issue time and time again, especially at times when Castor-containers art transported to Gorleben”. Thomas found the guided tour through the mine and information on life under ground very interesting, although she could not imagine working so deep below the surface. The shipment of the waste seemed safe, “but she will remain a bit sceptic”, in particular in view of the Asse problem.

Individual visitors as well as schools, clubs, societies and volunteer fire brigades make their way to the exhibition and the mine itself. This shows that the info centre has arrived is Salzgitter and is well received by people from the region and beyond. Many visitors want to pass on their impression and return once emplacement starts. Ulrike Thomas too; “maybe I should show this to my grandchildren”.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
